We’re a day late…so, Happy Second Day of Spring!
Whether your house is currently on the market, you’re thinking about selling, or you just flat out need some help in the yard, we’ve got a few quick and handy tips for you! March is the perfect month to get your hands a little dirty and clean up your yard to make room for all the new growth that spring and summer will bring. Block out a sunny Saturday afternoon and get ready to pull up, cut back and put down…
1. Clean Up Flower Beds and Borders
Rake up any fallen leaves or dead foliage, which can smother and kill other plants and grasses if not taken care of. Pull up weeds and spent annuals, and rake away old mulch to make room for a new, fresh, layer once all planting is done. Spread fertilizer early on in the season so that spring rains can help spread it deep below the surface. Finish by using and edger or a squared shovel to give beds that extra clean look, sure to gain you some curb appeal points from potential buyers.
2. Prune Shrubs and Trees
Cut any branches, that have been damaged by the cold, back to their live stem. Shape hedges with hand pruners to allow for the best growth–electric shears can cause a thick outer layer that prevents sunlight and air from reaching the core of the shrub. Prune spring-bloomers after they’ve bloomed, but go ahead and cut back summer-bloomers before you see buds swell.
3. Don’t Forget About the Lawn
Rake up and haul off any dead turf with a metal rake and wheelbarrow and leave compost and seed in its place. If you’re in a cooler climate, you might want to wait until April, but March is a great time to lay down your first layer of fertilizer and crabgrass treatment on the rest of the yard.
4. Fences, Pergolas, Decks & More
Remove any damaged or rotting wood. Scrub away signs of weathering with a mixture of warm water and liquid soap. Check for wobbly posts, chip away old paint, and sand rough edges. A fresh coat of stain will go a long way! For best results, wait until temperatures are above 50 degrees Fahrenheit before you do any outdoor painting or staining.
