Dutch Island in Savannah, GA

Dutch Island covers an area of approximately 500 square acres and is surrounded by the salt marshes of the Skidaway River, the Herb River, the Wilmington River and Grimbal Creek.

The island is managed by an all-volunteer Board of Directors, all nine members of which must reside on Dutch Island and which are elected by members of the Dutch Island Association.

Did you know that before there was a United States, there was a Dutch Island? King George IIgranted 30 acres of land in 1759 to a planter named Peter Radick, who named his plantation “Dutch Island”, and 50 acres on an island between Skidaway River and Thunderbolt Bluff to Michael Radick, who named his plantation “Providence”. A third grant, issued to Henry Denzler, names 50 acres of land in the area “Point Hope.” The king hoped that agriculture in this area would prove fruitful and flourish and it was, indeed, a success: corn, cotton and potatoes grew in abundance, in no small part thanks to the Savannah area’s mild climate and year-round good weather!

In 1806, Dutch Island was also known as Liberty Island. Non-agricultural businesses did not fare as well: a short-lived airplane factory never quite reached the heights of success of which its owner dreamed. For a while, Dutch Island was allowed to revert to forest and timber was the main crop. Bootleggers and poachers roamed the area freely.

In 1928, the Wessels family purchased Dutch Island and cared for and tended it faithfully for nearly six decades. In 1969, Charles Wessels received the necessary permission to explore real estate development that would work in harmony with the natural beauty of the land.
